How to Boost Your Curb Appeal for the New Year

You’ve got a spotless living room, your pantry is organized and you’ve successfully perfected the modern farmhouse dining room table décor. But from the outside, your home lacks charm. Here are some small ways to increase the curb appeal and make your home seem more inviting from the outside.

Clean your house!

You scrub the inside but often we forget to deep clean the outside of our homes. To keep it looking like new, clean it up with a power washer periodically. You can purchase one yourself or, in some areas, you can hire someone else to do it for you. Wash the windows (inside and out) and clean the gutters, downspouts and all doors, including garage doors.

Paint

Paint is a sure-fire way to boost the curb appeal of your home. Apply a coat or two of the same color or choose a new shade. If you’d like to paint it the same color, scrape a small swatch and bring it to the paint store to match it. Also paint the door, trim and shutters in a shade that complements the rest of your home.

Pay attention to the details

These details include door hardware and handles, light fixtures and house numbers. Polish the hardware or replace it with a style that complements the home, such as oiled bronze for traditional styles and brushed nickel for contemporary styles. Purchase new numbers with the same finish as your hardware or purchase an address plaque to affix to your home or place in your yard.

Update the style of your exterior lighting.

If you’re replacing lights, look for ones that have the same mounting system as your current ones. Add more lighting to increase the safety of your entryway by installing an overhead fixture or wall sconces.

Nurture your landscape

A well-maintained landscape and lawn add to your home’s appeal. Mow your lawn regularly, mulch and weed the garden beds and prune overgrown shrubs. Also, clear away any overgrown vines or invasive weeds that have crept into your landscape. In addition to mowing the lawn, add seed or sod to any spots you see during the wetter seasons of the year so that in the Summer, you’ll have a green and full yard. You can add color to your landscape with a few potted plants and flowers.

Tasks such as replacing missing mortar between bricks, resealing cracked asphalt and touching up faded or cracked paint may seem insignificant; however, these small things can make a world of difference in how your home appears to visitors!

Holiday Guest Cleaning Checklist

Tis' the season for overnight guests, frequent visitors, and hospitable hosting. We love this time of year! We also know it can be challenging to prepare and stay on top of cleaning tasks with all of the fun extras. To help you keep your home tidy and enjoy your guests we've created a simple checklist for you to use and share with your friends and family.

Step 1

Tidy-Up: Focus on decluttering and you'll have a more manageable foundation to work from when guests start to arrive.

Step 2

Deep-clean: Look around your home and evaluate three things that need a deep clean and focus on those for now. It's likely if you noticed those untidy areas your guests will too.

Step 3

Dusting: We love feather dusters, but Swiffer dusters work well. Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and high-up shelves.

Step 4

Soap and Water: Create a simple soap and water solution and wipe down exteriors, such as baseboards, cupboard doors, door handles, light switches, and appliances.

Step 5

Glass and Mirrors: Walk around your home and wipe down all of the windows and mirrors - this instantly makes your home feel cleaner and look brighter.

Step 6

Wash linens: Think beyond your guest bedroom sheets, toss washable shower curtains and drapes in the washing machine and rehang. We like to wash a load of towels as well so they feel nice and fresh.

Step 7

Every day Cleaning: Now is the time to focus on vacuuming, sweeping, and the every day tasks you usually tend too.

Home Winterization

Winterizing a home can be a huge endeavor. Calling your local power company and requesting and Energy Assessment could provide you with a list of energy saving changes to consider for your home. Of course, we suggest hiring a professional for larger jobs or jobs that you don’t feel comfortable completing on your own. However here’s a general winterizing checklist to consider this winter to keep your home cleaner and more energy efficient.

1) Rain Gutters. Rain Gutters should be cleaned yearly, sometimes even multiple times per year depending on the debris fall in your area. Homes in forest areas tend to require cleaning more often. If you do not feel safe cleaning your rain gutters please call a professional.

2) Windows and Doors. Check to see if air is seeping through the seems of your windows or doors, if so install a window insulator kit around your window. For doors, weather seal stripping works well and is very easy to install.

3) Detector Testing. This is a good time to check all of your detectors and home security cameras to ensure they are working properly. We like to give them a good soak and wipe at this time as well; its amazing how much dust is collected on smoke detecting units.

4) Protect your Pipes. Check all outdoor pipes and ensure they have proper insulation and/or are shut off during freezing temperatures. This is also a good time to reevaluate your water and sprinkler timing systems.

5) Chimney Sweep. If you use a fireplace it is a good idea to have your chimney professionally cleaned yearly.
