Spring Cleaning Rules and Checklists

Spring is here! Which means it is our favorite time of the year: time for Spring Cleaning!! There’s a ton of spring cleaning lists out there, here’s a few great ones:

Your Ultimate Spring-Cleaning Checklist by Martha Stewart.

Spring-Cleaning That Won't Take Over Your Life: 8 Hours, Start to Finish by Oprah.

And here’s a few simple cleaning rules to follow as you work your way through the checklists above.

1) Work room by room. Don’t try to deep clean your entire house by yourself in a day. Unless you live in a very small space this likely won’t work. Instead plan to clean room by room allowing you the time you need to deep clean everything in this area.

2) Organize as you go. Plan to get rid of old and unused items. We suggest eliminating items that you haven't used in the past year, its likely you don't need them or could store them in a more permanent storage area versus your everyday living spaces. Bringing trash bins and storage bins with you to each area you are working will bring ease to this step.

3) Plan ahead. Don't just start deep cleaning because you get the urge, use that energy to organize your garage ;) When deep cleaning we encourage you to always plan ahead by knowing what rooms you want to clean, plan out the products you will need to tackle the job, for example glass cleaner for windows or glass structures; as well as the tools you've need for the job, for example feather dusters for dusting special items or a map for hard wood floors.

Organization Tips for Small Spaces

Keeping a small space functionally organized can be a challenge. Creativity and accessibility are key concepts to keep in mind when redesigning or reorganizing a small space.

Set a Goal
We suggest creating a list of functionalities you want the space to serve. Is it a place you want to easily find items, is it a space to inspire?

Plan it Out
With your goal in mind begin to plan your space by drawing out the key furniture and functionality elements of the room.

Enhance the Functionality
With your plan in mind, start playing with items that inspire your or smaller items that enhance the functionality of the room or naturally marry. For example, if you are organizing a gift wrapping area, consider adding your birthday cards or incorporating your paper and cardstock for tags and notes.

Take a Second Look
Oddly shaped corners or out of place windows can be harder to work with, but can allow for more storage or add clever design aesthetics to any space. Bookshelves, hanging plants or baskets, small sets of drawers, and even furniture can be tucked into these challenging areas to help open up space elsewhere, add flare to your space and keep everything organizationally optimized.
